James 5:7–12 7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!

10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.

"Enduring wrong is not the same as excusing abuse. You can be patient and still walk away from what is harming you."

Having a victim mentality about everything is leads to a life of bitterness and pain.

Verses 7–10 use makrothumia — literally "long-tempered."

Verse 11 THEN switches words for Job to hupomonē — Endurance, "holding up under" weight.  Patience with CIRCUMSTANCES.

James 3 Keys to Suffering

  1. WAIT LIKE THE FARMER   (vv. 7–8)

7 "Be patient then, brothers, until the Lord's coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop and how patient he is…"

Seeds:  We plant, and let God do rest.

2 Corinthians 1:8–9 — "We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers, about the hardships we suffered… We were under great pressure, far beyond our ability to endure, so that we despaired even of life… But this happened that we might not rely on ourselves but on God, who raises the dead. He has delivered us… and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will continue to deliver us."

8 "You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord's coming is near."

God is working, even if the seed is below soil

  1. WATCH OUR Words  (vs. 9, 12)

Sin 1 Grumbling

9 "Don't grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!"

"Don't blame your troubles on one another."

Sin 2 Swearing

12 "Above all, my brothers, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. Let your 'Yes' be yes, and your 'No,' no, or you will be condemned."

Don't make it worse by overreacting, saying things you can’t support.

  1. LEARN FROM THE SUFFERERS

The prophets — patience when PEOPLE dont change

10 "Brothers, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord."

Job—Endurance under what makes NO sense

When James choose a word here, was NOT  "patience," but perseverance.

Fact is: Job endured.  And it was not easy

Why I Can Endure — 3 Anchors

  1. Gods Will REWARD

Matthew 5:11–12 — "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you… great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets before you."

  1. God is WORKING.

11b "…have SEEN what the Lord finally brought about."

Romans 8 — "If we hope for what we do not yet have, we wait for it patiently… And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him."

  1. God is IN CONTROL
